The 10th Anniversary Tour launched at Westfield’s new shopping centre construction site in Stratford with a celebratory reception. John Spanswick, Chair of Bovis Lend Lease and HSE Board member, was the keynote speaker sharing his experience of the importance of good health and safety practice as well as reading out a testimonial from the Prime Minister Gordon Brown who congratulated everyone involved over the last ten years. John was joined by Neil Stephens of the HSE who gave the history of the WWT campaign and some of its achievements throughout London and the South East.
From Monday 1st June the white van sets out on a two week tour of London and the South East, visiting two construction sites a day giving staff on site the opportunity to find out more about staying safe on site by watching DVDs, speaking to Health and Safety Practitioners and taking part in tool box talks and hand tool demonstrations courtesy of DeWalt and Speedy Hire.
Towards the end of the tour the London & South East Health & Safety Initiative take the WHITE VAN to the South East Agricultural Show in Ardingly, West Sussex from 11th to 13th June to speak to the public about good health and safety practice. There will be more demonstrations as well as fun activities for children.

On Sunday 14th June the van then makes its way back to London for the Barts and the London Charity Sponsored Fun Run in Victoria Park, Hackney. Representatives from construction companies that have supported the London & South East Health & Safety Initiative and the WWT Campaign will be running to raise money for St Bart's Mesothelioma Research, which is one of only two research centres in the UK looking at treatments and cures for those suffering from asbestos related diseases.
Tim Shambrook, WWT Campaign manager, said:
“Since Working Well Together launched in 1999 we have had numerous white van tours throughout the UK and more than 41,000 construction workers have attended one; the white van tour is the perfect way to celebrate 10 years of working with and educating the construction industry on good health and safety working practices. The aim of the white van tour is always to be engaging and show construction workers that we understand the pressures of working on a construction site but that cutting corners when it comes to health and safety is never a good idea.”
Shambrook continued:
“We have got an exciting line up of events over the next two weeks and I am particularly looking forward to speaking to on-site workers about health and safety. We are also eager to meet at least the next 41,000 construction workers during the next 10 years of Working Well Together!”
